The standards
- Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force: waist-to-height ratio under 0.55.
- Marine Corps: 0.52 or less. Above that, a body fat assessment follows.
- Coast Guard: has its own body composition screening; check the current standard with your unit.
- General health guideline for civilians: keep your waist to less than half your height (a ratio under 0.5).
Standards as published by each service, checked October 2026. They change often: always confirm the current standard with your unit or recruiter. This calculator is an estimate, not an official measurement or medical advice. Sources: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force, NICE (general health).
